As interim chair of the CS department from 2006-07, he played a leading role in the merger of the department with the Department of Information and Software Engineering. Subsequently, he served as chair of the department for two terms from 2011-2019, a period that coincided with a nationwide explosion of interest in CS among undergraduates, reflected in a dramatic (four-fold) increase in CS majors at Mason to around 2000 students. After stepping down as chair, he served as the Associate Dean for Computing Programs and Initiatives for the Volgenau School of Engineering before serving as the Interim Divisional Dean of the newly created School of Computing in the College of Engineering & Computing (CEC) from November 2020 to August 2022. As Interim Divisional Dean, he was responsible for laying the groundwork for the new school and played a leading role in guiding CEC’s efforts towards meeting Mason’s commitments to Virginia’s Technology Talent Investment Program (TTIP).
